The most memorable and enchanting signs available are created from
hundreds, if not thousands, of single strands of polymer fibre that
can range from 0.5mm to 3mm in diameter. When “strung” into a sign
face in a graphic pattern of any chosen complexity and bundled together
in a precise sequence at a specialised light driver (or drivers)
the most stunning animated graphics or patterns can be created.
Words, pictorials, logos, backgrounds, letter outlines, infills,
drop-shadows can be produced in a limitless number of ways to provide
customers with signs that are noticed and talked about….and that
is very good for business!
While more costly than other signs the extra attention they attract
is proof of their worth. With only one or two 25W lamps required
for their operation and no sophisticated electronics huge power
savings are assured. They are also virtually indestructible.
Some specifications of glass and polymer side emission fibre can
also be used for signage provided that their mechanical properties
and other characteristics are properly evaluated and specified for
the task in hand.
Newly available fibres and light drivers have now opened up new
opportunities. Low power use, absolute safety, ease of installation,
minimal maintenance, virtual indestructibility, immersability in
water and the ability to cycle through up to eight colours in the
one cable, makes fibre optics an exciting sign prospect for the
future.
