Fibre optics are undoubtedly a retail lighting medium of the future
as brighter and more efficient light drivers are created that accommodate
larger bundles of fibre, and downlights and light emitters are designed
that match the output of conventional lighting such as fluorescent,
tungsten halogen ,metal halide, neon and the many similar products
and derivatives from these.
Eye-catching displays and signage can be created using fibre optics
where other products can often only be described as mediocre. In
general lighting of the conventional types fibre optics are able
to add style, colour wash, ambience and even drama that ensures
that customers feel good in the space.
A departure from conventional methods in selected situations, or
the creation of a retail environment that is unique and memorable
for shoppers, enables fibre optics to make their introduction in
a very tangible way. Retailers , particularly of boutique-type products
such as cosmetics, jewellery ,liquor and confectionery, but also
other merchandise, would be well advised to ask their designer to
make a full and objective evaluation of fibre optics in their lighting
design. This may involve a partial or complete departure from convention
but the outcome will be distinctive if not unique.
With air conditioning and lighting now major cost factors in operating
retail premises, particularly the heat extraction and heat exposure
issues that accompany these, fibre optics are now being seriously
considered in conjunction with changes to design and merchandise
presentation so that any new look and quantum change in running
costs are combined to make a real and lasting difference for both
the retailer and customer.
Shopping precincts of every type, mainstreet, mall or arcade can
benefit from fibre optics in their many forms. Inside and outside
shops, overhead in atriums and wall structures, outside in canopies
and facades, underfoot as pavers, up-lights and decorative features,
and in rest and traffic areas as markers, garden and seating features
and bollards….they are all viable and economical applications for
fibre optics.
